Cold Heart Cash

Project Overview

This short comedy, directed by Justin Poulsen, was produced at Chapman University as part of the the Advanced Production program. The film is about a first time bank robber who must cope with a major hitch in his plans.

For this project I used a unique post-production work-flow in order to fulfill my duties as both editor and sound designer. Since the film was shot on the RED ONE MX digital cinema camera and since we had a rapid post-production timeline, I opted to use Adobe Premiere Pro rather than Avid or FCP to cut the film. This allowed me to do a state-of-the-art online edit in RED RAW 4K (.R3D) as opposed to the traditional method of using a DI (a digital intermediate format). Using this brand new workflow, I was able to maintain the 4K resolution (i.e., roughly four times the resolution of 1080P) as well as the original color data throughout the editing process.

In addition to Premiere, I utilized After Effects (for over 20 VFX shots and titles), Audition (for noise reduction), Photoshop (for titles), Encore (for BluRay & DVDs), RedCineX (for RAW R3D previews) and ProTools (for sound design) in order to create the final product. By using this new workflow, I was able to master the final product in 4K and deliver a 1080P video without ever needing to transcode the source footage, which means that there is absolutely no generational loss due to re-compression.

In sum, this project is unique because it is the first film at Chapman University's film school to be entirely edited, colored and finished in RAW 4K from a RED camera.
